St. Joseph Parish was founded in 1866 and named for St. Joseph, the foster-father of Jesus Christ. The original church was located on the corner of Wiley and Galena Streets in what is now northwest St. Louis. The parish served the growing number of German and Irish immigrants who had moved to the area. After the population of the parish grew, a larger church was built in the corner of North Grand and Southwest Avenues around the turn of the 20th century.
