St. Hugh's Church is an Anglican church located in the city of Oxford, England. It is named after St. Hugh of Lincoln, the medieval bishop best known for founding Lincoln Cathedral. The Church stands in the heart of the city and serves as an important part of Oxford's history and cultural heritage. History The original building of St. Hugh's Church was built around 1036 during the reign of Edward the Confessor. It was originally annexed to the Priory of St Frideswide and housed a monastic community. The church was rebuilt in the late 12th century, with additions made in the 13th and 14th centuries. Between the 14th and 16th centuries, the church saw a period of decline, resulting in its eventual closure by 1541. The church was ultimately resurrected in 1696, when Oxfordshire resident Peter Burden presented it to the town of Oxford. In 1777, a major renovation and expansion was undertaken, including the building of a new nave and other additions.
