SS. Cyril & Methodius Slovak Catholic Church is a parish of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Cleveland. The church was founded in 1896 to serve the growing Slovak Catholic community in Cleveland’s industrial west side, and the current church building opened in 1924. In the East 40th Street Historic District, it is the oldest continually used Slovak church in the United States. It is one of the best churches in USA which you must visit.

History:

This church began with a nucleus of members of St. Wendelin parish who met in a room at the McDonald Hotel at Central and West 25th Streets in Cleveland. This group then built a modest wooden building and organized the congregation of Saint Cyril & Methodius Slovak Catholic Church. The new church was dedicated on June 25, 1896, and given the authority to conduct litany services and worship. The parish grew and within a short time, it became necessary to build a new and larger church. The cornerstone of the present Romanesque Revival style church was laid June 15, 1924, and the new building was dedicated on June 29, 1924. This is why, it is considered one of the oldest churches in USA.

SS Cyril & Methodius Church is located in the East 40th Street Historic District and is the oldest continually used Slovak Catholic church in the United States. It was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1998 and is a contributing structure in the East 40th Street Historic District. The traditional Lourdes Grotto outside the church also attracts many visitors year-round.

SS Cyril & Methodius Church offers services that include weekly Masses, sacrament of Reconciliation, Slovak choral concerts, Irish-Slovak cultural events, a food pantry, and an annual Slovak Festival. The annual Sviatky (Saints Day) mass is held each August 15th in honor of the patron saints Saint Cyril (Cyril of Turvo) and Saint Methodius (Methodius of Moravia).This beautiful church in USA has made a lot of significance in the past.
