Brief History:

The Selimiye Mosque, or the Great Mosque of Konya, is an Ottoman mosque in Konya, Turkey. The mosque was commissioned in 1568 by Sultan Selim II and was built in memory of Selim's father Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent and his grandfather Sultan Mehmed the Conqueror. The mosque was built in the classical Ottoman style and designed by the Ottoman imperial architect Mimar Sinan. The mosque was completed in 1571 and is considered to be one of the masterpieces of Ottoman architecture. The mosque is situated in Konya's old city and its four minarets and four domes can be seen from miles away. The interior is decorated with a variety of tiles, frescoes, and wall hangings and the mihrab (niche indicating the direction of prayer) is made of marble. Architecture:

The Selimiye Mosque, one of the most important works of Ottoman architecture in Konya, Turkey, was designed by Mimar Sinan. The mosque is built on a high platform with four minarets at each corner of the building. It is built on an irregular octagon plan, with a central dome and four Half domes connected by wide wall arches and two pointed arches creating an inner courtyard. The exterior facade of the mosque has a classical Ottoman style with its tall domes and minarets. On the lower part of the building there are four porches, each one with one of the four minarets at the corner and five domed sections located at equidistant points along the walls. Above the entrance, there is a large inscription with Allah's name written in gold. The interior of the mosque is decorated with beautiful Iznik tiles and high-quality Mihrab and Pulpit. There are eleven windows in the walls which provide additional light. The high wooden ceiling of the mosque is adorned with geometric motifs. The mihrab is decorated with blue and green tiles. The entrance gate has a wide arch which is decorated with intricate brickwork. The mosque also includes a library, a Qur'anic school, and several other support buildings. The courtyards of the mosque provide a place for worshipers to pray and socialize. The Selimiye Mosque is an example of superb and timeless Ottoman architecture, and it has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2015.
