History:

The Citadel was built as a defensive fortification against Crusader attacks by Salah ad-Din al-Ayyubi (Saladin) between 1176 and 1183 AD. It was initially used as a royal residence and was the seat of Egypt’s government during the Ayyubid and Mamluk dynasties. Later, it was used as a military base, with a garrison of 4,000 soldiers (the largest in Egypt at the time). It was also used as a fortress to deter any would-be invaders.
