The foundation stone for Saint Mary's was laid in 1821 and the building was consecrated as a chapel in December 1821. The first Mass in Saint Mary's declared the district a new parish and by 1849 the original chapel had been completely replaced by a larger and more ornate building. It became a cathedral in 1855.
