Mount Hasan is an inactive stratovolcano overlooking the central Anatolian plains in the Aksaray Province of Turkey. It is the highest mountain in central Anatolia at 3,268 metres (10,736 feet). The mountain has a habitation history dating back to the Hittite period where it is mentioned in two texts that describe its use as a cult site. In the Hittite period and also during the Roman period, the mountain slopes were reportedly used for grain growing. In the Middle Ages, numerous fortresses arose in the area surrounding the mountain, mainly due to its strategic location as a sentinel towards the southeast. The mountain was first climbed in 1963 by a group of Turkish scientists, led by Dr. Osman Erkol, who measured its height at 3,258 metres (10,686 feet). This was confirmed by Turkish surveyors in 1983, who established its peak at 3,268 metres (10,736 feet). The area around Mount Hasan is a popular trekking and climbing destination in Turkey and part of the area has parts of the Taurus Mountain National Park since 1996. Within the mountain boundaries, there are several lakes, ancient castles and other archeological remains, some of which trace back to the Bronze Age.
