It lies at the foot of Mount Sinai, where legend has it that Moses received the Ten Commandments. The monastery has a rich and long history, having been sacked and destroyed numerous times over the centuries, but was eventually restored and still serves as a pilgrimage site to this day. History:

It is believed that the monastery was founded by Emperor Justinian I in the 6th century AD. Since then, it has gone through many rebuilds and was damaged multiple times in the 11th and 12th centuries by earthquakes and raids by Muslim armies. It was restored in the 14th century by a monk called Barnabas and later refurbished by Catholic Monarchs in the 15th century. The monastery has since stayed under both Coptic and Greek Orthodox control. This is why, it is considered one of the oldest churches in Egypt.
