The Moesgaard Museum, located in Aarhus in Jutland, Denmark, is one of the country’s premier cultural and archaeological museums. Founded in 1992, the museum is a division of Aarhus University and is dedicated to the study of human history and culture from the Stone Age to the present day. The Museum is located on a spectacular spot on the edge of Aarhus Bay with a view of the historic Aarhus Cathedral. It houses a number of permanent exhibitions, including one dedicated to prehistoric Denmark, plus collections of Viking artifacts and artefacts from different cultural periods. The Moesgaard Museum’s two main attractions are its outdoor archaeological park and the Near Eastern exhibition featuring artefacts from the Iron Age. The museum was founded on the initiative of professor Eske Willerslev who in 1991 established the position of professor of arhaeology and ethnology at the University of Aarhus. The university saw this as an opportunity to create an atmosphere of research linking the disciplines of archaeology, ethnology, history, and cultural geography, and to do fieldwork in Denmark and the Near East. In 1995 the Royal Veterinary and Agricultural University decided to move to Frederiksberg in Copenhagen, leading to the University of Aarhus getting more space for the establishment of the Moesgaard Museum. The Museum was designed by architect Knud Holscher and opened to the public in 2000.
