History:
Møllerup Estate is an estate located just outside Rønde on the central Danish island of Djursland. The estate is more than 1000 years old and was originally part of the manor of Haunstrup, founded in 982. It was first recorded as "Møllerup", in a document from 1240. The estate remained in the ownership of the same family until the 18th century when it was purchased by Lauritz de Coninck in 1777, and it has remained in the ownership of the same family ever since. In 1802, Møllerup became an independent estate with 3 parcels of land. Ownership changed again in the 1940s when it was acquired by Sidney de Coninck, who carried out extensive refurbishments and modernisations of the estate. In 1996, the Møllerup Estate was donated to the Møllerup-billeder permanent fund, a charitable foundation dedicated to preserving the estate and its history. Today the estate is open to the public and is used as a venue for cultural events. The estate is listed as a Danish heritage site and contains several protected and listed buildings including the main house, summer house and stables, as well as 7 listed park and garden buildings. It is also home to the Møllerup Bird Reserve which is an important resting place for migratory birds. The estate's most prominent feature is the Renaissance-style tower, which was built in 1850 and is one of the foremost examples of neo-Renaissance architecture in Denmark.
