History:

The Linderhof Palace in Bavaria, Germany, was originally commissioned by King Ludwig II of Bavaria. Construction on the palace began in 1867, and it took 11 years to complete. It was built in the French Rococo style, often referred to as the “Royal Villa.” The interior and exterior designs and decorations of the palace reflect Ludwig's admiration for the French kings Louis XIV and Louis XV. Ludwig's love of the French monarchy and his keen interest in castle architecture is also reflected in the surrounding grounds of Linderhof Palace. These include extensive formal gardens, a spectacular Italian-style garden, cascading waterfalls, and a pond with its own artificial island – all designed to imitate Versailles. A version of the world-famous Grotto of the Venus from Versailles can also be found in the grounds of Linderhof Palace. Linderhof Palace was used by Ludwig for only a few years and his death in 1886 meant the end of the palace's use as a royal residence. It was then inherited by his brother Otto, who reopened it as a museum. During World War II, it was used as a lodging for refugees, and subsequently damaged by Allied bombings.
