History:

Istanbul Modern, located in the heart of Istanbul, Turkey’s cultural, historical, and economic capital, is the country’s first and only modern art museum. Founded in 2004, the museum focuses on contemporary art from the region, including Turkey, the Middle East, Eastern Europe, and Central Asia. In its expansive and vibrant permanent collections, Istanbul Modern is home to a vast array of works from around the world that express the stories, perspectives, and aesthetics from the region. The venue first opened in 2004 as an initiative of the Environmental Education and Culture Foundation (EECF) as part of the organization’s mission to spread knowledge about the environment while encouraging people to appreciate modern art.
