Brief History:
Gök Medrese is one of the oldest religious buildings in Sivas, located in the oldest part of the city, Büyük Kayacık. The Gök Medrese was built in 1271 by Kılıç Arslan 3. Presently, it’s a mosque that consists of a two-story rectangular building with 17 domes and a large pointed arch entrance. The elliptical courtyard is surrounded by an open gallery with seven domes. The galleries and domes are supported by 16 semi-cylindrical and 4 quadrangular columns. The walls are richly decorated with ceramic and stone motifs, as well as inscriptions in Arabic. The interior of the central dome has an interesting pattern with its 8 pointed stars of different sizes. The interior of the mosque is also decorated with many marble statues and magnificent ceiling frescos. Inside the mosque there is a mihrab and minbar. The mihrab should be one of the most beautiful in Turkey. The minbar is quite simple with a stepped top and no adornment.
