History:

The history of Goslar Cathedral began in 980, when Emperor Otto II of the Holy Roman Empire donated the site as a gift to the Bishop of Hildesheim. At the time Goslar was a thriving trading center in the region and the cathedral was built as a symbol of the power and prestige of the Empire. During the 13th century, the original Romanesque chapel was rebuilt in the form of a Gothic cathedral. This was due to the increase in local wealth, generated from nearby silver mines, which allowed for the church to be constructed as a sign of prosperity. The original Romanesque chapel was built some time between 980 and 1180. The Gothic cathedral was then constructed between 1180 and 1230 in the High Gothic style. The cathedral has a total length of 75 metres. The two towers that currently stand are not the original, but were built in 1427 and 1480 to replace the originals which collapsed in the 14th century.
