Gimming Kirke was originally a part of a larger abbey complex founded by the Cistercian Order in 1313. The main temple of the abbey was dedicated to Saint Benedict, and was later renamed after the nearby river, the Gimmer. In 1536, the abbey was dissolved by King Frederick I of Denmark during the Protestant Reformation, and the church was taken under the control of the Lutheran Church of Denmark. Over the next few centuries, the church was gradually rebuilt and repaired to keep up with changing tastes and trends, and it gained its current Neo-Gothic design in the late 19th century.
