: The Fatih Mosque, also known as the Conqueror's Mosque, is a prominent landmark in Istanbul, Turkey. Built by the Ottoman sultan Mehmed the Conqueror between 1463 and 1470, it marks the site of the conquest of Constantinople by the Turks in 1453, and is the site of the Tomb of Mehmed the Conqueror. The mosque complex was built on the site of the ancient Church of the Holy Apostles, destroyed by the Conqueror's forces when capturing the city. The existing building is believed to be the fourth mosque to have been built at this site, and is the largest in Istanbul. The mosque was further enlarged and modified in subsequent centuries, with the final modifications made in the mid-19th century. It is one of the most famous mosque in Turkey which you must visit.

Architecture:

The Fatih Mosque complex in Istanbul is one of the most grandiose and impressive sacred complexes in the Islamic world. It was built between the 18th century and the 19th century by the Ottoman Sultan Mehmed II, the Conqueror. The grand mosque contains a noble sanctuary and several other structures such as a hospice, charity dispensary, toilets, and three different medreses (schools of Islamic Education). The main building itself is a monumental example of classical Ottoman mosque architecture. It is rectangular in shape and features a grand central dome, four corner pavilions, two minarets and four smaller domes, and five smaller domes. The courtyard of the complex is surrounded by a single wall with a gate called Hünkar Kapisi (emperor's gate). Inside the walls, there is a grand fountain in the middle that is surrounded by many Islamic-style arches. The main mosque is enclosed by high walls of stone and has a large marble pavement that is decorated with marble mosaics. The mosque's interior is divided into three main parts: the main entrance hall, the prayer hall, and the meydan-i sharif (the noble courtyard). The walls are covered with multi-colored marble and decorated with traditional Islamic patterns and motifs. The entrance is marked by a tall portal flanked by ostentatiously ornamented minarets. Inside, two wide aisles lead to the main prayer hall, where a large mihrab (niche indicating the qibla, the direction of Mecca) is located in the center. The mihrab is accompanied by two minbar (minaret pulpits) where the sermon is delivered. The mosque is considered one of the most important monuments of Ottoman religious architecture and its minarets are considered to represent the symbolic apex of Ottoman history. The Islamic-style arches, golden mosaics, elaborate marble and floral patterns, ornamental crescents, and dignified calligraphy all combine to give the mosque an elegant and dignified atmosphere. Fatih Mosque in Istanbul is open for visitors throughout the week from 8.00 am until dusk. The exact timings may vary according to the season and usually during the summer, the mosque stays open till 10 pm.
