Ely Cathedral is an Anglican cathedral in the city of Ely, Cambridgeshire, England. It was founded in AD 672 and it is the third longest cathedral in the UK and the fourth tallest in England.

The first cathedral at Ely was founded in 672 by St. Æthelthryth who, after being widowed and pensioned in 673, became a nun and started her foundation at Ely. In 970 the monastery at Ely was refounded by a bishop called Ethelwold, who drew monks from all over England to begin a monastic revival. The Norman cathedral was built in the 1070s, replacing the old Saxon building. Over the centuries the cathedral has been extended with the Lady Chapel being added in 1321, the Retrochoir in 1376 and an octagonal chapter house intended for private prayer in 1420. The cathedral has undergone various building works since including a major restoration programme in 1901-1907. Ely Cathedral This is why, it is considered one of the oldest churches in England.
