The mission of the Institute was to train qualified specialists in the engineering and technical fields due to the urgent need for such professionals in the new industrialized south of Russia. During the initial years, the Institute offered courses in mechanical, electrical, and urban planning engineering, as well as sociology and pedagogy. In 1956, the Institute underwent a major reorganization which resulted in the establishment of several faculties and departments, including the Automation of Production and Control Systems, Mechanics and Technology, Economics, and Engineering. During the 1970s and 1980s, the Institute began to actively develop and improve its academic and scientific programs. It established ties with many foreign universities and research institutions, organized international conferences and symposia, and invited prominent researchers from around the world to lecture at the Institute. In 1993, the Institute was granted full university status and its name was changed to the Don State Technical University (DSTU). In the years that followed, the University underwent a major modernization process and expanded its range of study programs to include management, finance, and economics in addition to its core engineering and technical disciplines.
