The building was opened in 1825 and has seen many major productions since then, including Wagner's Ring Cycle, Stravinsky's The Rake’s Progress, Bizet's Carmen, and Strauss' Salome. The Cologne Opera house is located on the south bank of the Rhine, opposite the cathedral. The history of the Cologne Opera House begins in 1795 when the city of Cologne was occupied by French forces. During this period, the French revolutionary government established a municipal theater, the Stadt Theater, in Cologne. In 1819 it was decided that the Stadt Theater needed to be replaced with a grander facility, and a new site was chosen in an area with good transport links, and near the cathedral and Rhine. Construction was completed in 1825, and the opening night included performances of operas by Gioacchino Rossini. During the 19th century, the Cologne Opera House became a major center for opera and musical theater in Germany. In 1883 it also became the first theater in Germany to feature synchronized surtitles, which were projected onto a pane just in front of the stage. The building was damaged in World War II and subsequently demolished in 1952. A new building, designed by Bernhard Pfau, was opened in 1974.
