Chiesa di San Calisto In Rome: History,Facts, & Services

Chiesa di San Calisto is a Roman Catholic church located in Rome, Italy. It was first built in the 7th century and has since been renovated multiple times. The church is dedicated to Pope St. Calixtus I, the third successor of St. Peter, who is known for both his charitable works, especially in free legal assistance for the poor and for his role in ending the schism of the Church. The current baroque façade, facing onto the Via della Lungaretta and featuring two bell-towers, was added in 1650 by the architect Giovanni Battista Soriale. Inside, the church has a single nave with a large Baroque altarpiece of Saint Calisto, a statue of the saint and both Baroque and Neoclassical frescoes. The church also serves a spiritual sanctuary to those seeking refuge while on the road and offers daily masses open to all Catholics.
