History:

The history of Bonn Minster in the German city of Bonn dates back to the 8th century. It was first built as a three-aisled basilica in the early part of the 8th century on the site of an earlier wooden church. After several reconstructions throughout the centuries, in the 18th century it was given the Baroque appearance it has today. In the 11th century, the Roman Catholic Archbishop of Cologne was given jurisdiction over the Bonn Minster. Then in 1269, it became the seat of the Archbishop of Trier, which had jurisdiction over the whole city. The Minster was severely damaged in the great fire of 1794, during the siege of Bonn by the armies of Revolutionary France. Fortunately, the great Baroque altarpiece, the Last Supper, was preserved - it was made of wood, thus it did not burn and was still in use in its original form until 1820. The fire caused much of the interior decoration to be destroyed, and the church was heavily renovated in the 19th century. The two towers located to the east of the main entrance were added to the exterior in the 18th century. An astronomical clock was added to one of the towers in 1808. During World War II, the bombing of Bonn caused extensive damage to the Minster. However, the stonework was able to be restored and the Minster regained much of its former glory. Today, Bonn Minster is the seat of the Archbishop of Cologne, and it has been extensively restored. It is now one of Bonn’s most important and impressive landmarks.
