History:

The basilica was built as a shrine to honor the Virgin Mary's appearance in 1531 to Saint Juan Diego Cuauhtlatoatzin. Construction started in 1531, and a sanctuary was consecrated in 1709. During the 19th century, the basilica underwent a major expansion and renovation that included the addition of two towers and a dome. In 1910, Pope Pius X declared the basilica to be a minor basilica of the Catholic Church. This is why, it is considered one of the oldest churches in Mexico.

The Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe has two main structures: the old basilica, which is the first sanctuary honoring the Virgin Mary and dates back to 1709; and the new basilica, which was built in 1976.
