Church of Our Lady Help of Christians In Czechia: History,Facts, & Services

Church of Our Lady Help of Christians is an historic Catholic church located in the eastern part of the Czech Republic. Founded in the 16th century, it is one of the oldest churches in the country and still operates as an active Catholic parish. The church was built in a Gothic style and is noted for its ornate, late-Baroque interior and its renowned organ, which is still used in worship services. The church's interior is decorated in a classical Austrian style, reflecting its association with the Habsburg Empire. The church is dedicated to Our Lady Help of Christians, a venerated title of the Virgin Mary, and it is affiliated with her feast day on May 24th. Every May, the church hosts mass and special events to commemorate Our Lady with a solemn novena. As part of the feast day, the massive organ and orchestra provide a stirring rendition of the liturgy from the tower, which can be heard throughout the city. The church also holds the distinction of being one of the few churches in the Czech Republic that was not closed after the communist takeover in 1948. It continued to operate in its original form and was personally attended by Pope John Paul II during his visit to Czechia in 1990. In addition to regular services, the church hosts wedding ceremonies, organ concerts, and other special events throughout the year.
