History:

The Cyprus University of Technology (CUT) was established in 2004 by the Ministry of Education and Culture in order to offer education and research opportunities in the fields of science and technology. Its first President and Rector was Professor Andreas Pittas and was inaugurated in 2008. Prior to this, a Polytechnic was founded in Limassol in 1985. Its mission was to offer a wide range of technical and professional education and courses mainly at post-secondary and undergraduate levels, regarding the needs of the time. In 1996, the Polytechnic began offering postgraduate studies in cooperation with foreign universities, such as University of Patras in Greece and University of Hertfordshire in UK. By 2004, the need for extended research and education became apparent and so the Government of Cyprus established CUT to further this purpose. Since its development, CUT has extended its research activities to include, interdisciplinary collaborations, cooperation with industry, international research efforts with several universities and institutions worldwide, entrepreneurship support, and development of commercial products and services. In 2012, the European Commission (EC) recognised CUT as one of the 14 “excellence hubs” in Higher Education institutions in the European Research Area, granting it official funding to realise full internationally competitive research programmes. In addition, since its inception, CUT maintained its cooperation and strategic partnership with several international organisations with the aim of promoting the scientific spirit, disseminating knowledge and fostering mutual understanding amongst people of different cultural backgrounds. To promote the university’s scientific activities, CUT participates in numerous international and national initiatives such as the Erasmus+ programme, the European University Initiative, the British Council, the Cyprus Universal Science Festival and the Global Startup Challenge. Since then, CUT continued to apply and develop innovative research and educational methods in order to better serve its students, staff and the whole Cypriot society. As of 2021, CUT is consistently ranked in the top 1% of universities worldwide, according to the Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings.
