, the concept of the railway museum was first promoted by Mr. Stelios Antoniou who was employed by the Cyprus Government Railway in the 1960s. The proposal was welcomed by the Ministry of Communications and Works, and Evrychou railway station was chosen to be the site for the museum. In 1981, the museum was opened by the Transport Minister at the time, Mr. Markos Drakos. The museum was later converted into a non-profit association, the Cyprus Railway Museum, in 1995 by virtue of a decision of the Council of Ministers. The museum is dedicated to preserving, presenting, and promoting the history of railways in Cyprus. The museum collections include a wide variety of railway rolling stock, artifacts, documents, photographs and maps. Visitors to the museum are able to see various locomotives, wagons, coaches, and other items of rolling stock, such as the steam locomotives of the Magellan, Phoenix and Centaur class, which were once used to pull the trains of the Cypriot rail system. In 2003, the museum was awarded the European Railway Heritage Award, given by the European Heritage Label Scheme in recognition of its contribution to the preservation and promotion of the European railway heritage.
