History:
The Ayios Philon Church is a small Greek Orthodox church located on the Karpasia Peninsula of Cyprus. It is believed to have been built in the 14th century, during the Venetian occupation of the island. The church is named for St. Philon, a disciple of Apostle Paul, who was martyred in Nicosia during the 1st century AD. The church consists of a single nave and apse, with a raised bema at the center of the nave. A charming bell tower stands at one corner of the building. The walls of the church are whitewashed, and a curved window at the front indicates the presence of a priestly dwelling at one time. There is a marble disc dedicated to the patron saint located at the entrance. In 1858, the church underwent renovations and and a new roof was constructed. During the 1950’s and 1960’s the church underwent further renovations, and the present stone facade was added. The Ayios Philon Church is still actively used for worship today. Although small in size, it holds great historical and cultural importance for Cyprus. It has been designated a protected monument by the Department of Antiquities of Cyprus since 1987.
