History:

The Jardín Botánico de Cienfuegos, also known as the Botanical Garden of Cienfuegos, was founded in 1899 by the Frenchman and botanist Armando Jouenne, who served as director until his death in 1927. It was the first institution of its kind in the Caribbean and was initially the private property of Jouenne before being donated to the Cuban government in 1933. The garden was then managed by the National Institute of Agrarian Reform and became a state-owned institution in 1959. The gardens span 15 hectares and contain a number of distinct habitats including a tropical forest, a mangrove swamp, a savannah and a littoral vegetation that is typical of the region. The garden is home to a large variety of plants, including orchids, ferns, bromeliads, cacti, palms, and spices. The garden boasts a number of plant collections, including the Cactaceae Collection, the Palmae Collection, the Bromeliad collection and the Orchidaceae Collection. The gardens also contain a herbarium with more than 800 plant species, as well as a number of greenhouses used to propagate new species.
