It is an ideal destination for sunseekers wanting to get away from it all. Though it is not clear when exactly Cayo Levisa was first inhabited, there is considerable evidence that the island was settled and used as a fishing village by the aboriginal Chibchan people of the Caribbean region in early pre-Columbian times. The Island is believed to have been discovered by Spanish conquistadors in 1513, who named it Cayo Levisa (translated to English as, “Secret Island”). The island changed hands many times between the Spaniards, English, French and Dutch and eventually became part of the Cuban Republic in 1902. During the early 20th century, the island saw a population boom as it began to be used as a base of operations for a wide variety of maritime businesses. This included fishing, salt harvesting and smuggling. The island's popularity as a tourist destination began in the 1970s with the opening of the Cayo Levisa Hotel. This hotel, which now offers 55 Cabañas, six villas and a private dock, is situated on the southernmost end of the island.
