The Island is believed to have been discovered by Spanish conquistadors in 1513, who named it Cayo Levisa (translated to English as, “Secret Island”). The island changed hands many times between the Spaniards, English, French and Dutch and eventually became part of the Cuban Republic in 1902. During the early 20th century, the island saw a population boom as it began to be used as a base of operations for a wide variety of maritime businesses.
