History:
The history of Caño Cristales dates back to pre-Colombian times, when the Guahibo indigenous people first discovered the region. As early as 1515, conquistadors documented the existence of the phenomenon, but the area was barely populated until the late 19th century, when rubber tappers began settling the region. The region remained relatively unknown due to the often unstable political situation and lack of infrastructure to access the area. The Colombian government declared the region as a Special Natural Reserve in 1977 and, since then, local authorities have been protecting the area. In 2009, the government declared Caño Cristales to be National Park, thus providing a formation of legal framework for the protection and conservation of its biodiversity. In addition, increased tourist infrastructure has allowed for more access to the region, thus making the experience of Caño Cristales increasingly accessible to tourists. Now, the region is a UNESCO World Heritage site and continues to be an important part of Colombia's natural heritage. Each year, thousands of visitors from around the world come to experience the unique beauty and biodiversity of Caño Cristales.
