History:

The history of Caño Cristales dates back to pre-Colombian times, when the Guahibo indigenous people first discovered the region. The region remained relatively unknown due to the often unstable political situation and lack of infrastructure to access the area. The Colombian government declared the region as a Special Natural Reserve in 1977 and, since then, local authorities have been protecting the area.
