History:

Viña Santa Rita winery was established in 1880 in Santiago, Chile by Domingo Fernández, a Spanish entrepreneur who had just arrived from Europe. He originally named the winery "Vina San Mateo" after San Mateo de Alcantara, the patron saint of the city, but when it was sold to Don José María Busquets in 1904 it became Viña Santa Rita, in homage to the Battle of Santa Rita, fought during Chile's War of Independence from Spain. In 1926, Viña Santa Rita began expanding its vineyard holdings, acquiring new land in small parcels and planting more vines. Following Colonel Busquets’ death, his son José María continued to lead the winery until 1951 when his daughter, Lily, assumed control and began moving the brand toward the modern era. Lily Busquets was the first woman to run a Chilean winery, and as a token of her father's appreciation, she kept the winery's original name to honor him. Throughout the '50s and '60s, Viña Santa Rita continued to expand, planting the Rapel, Maipo, Curicó and Colchagua Valleys. In the 1970s, the winery saw the benefits of modernizing their vineyard management by focusing on quality over quantity, introducing new clones of Cabernet Sauvignon and using advanced irrigation techniques. In the 1990s, Viña Santa Rita became a global brand, with sales and distribution networks across the U.S., Europe, Asia and South America. In the following years, Viña Santa Rita continued to grow, purchasing new vineyards and investing heavily in innovation and sustainability.
