History:

Lago Chungara (also known as Chungará Lake in Spanish) is located in the Arica and Parinacota Region of Chile, near the border with Bolivia at 4,870 meters (16,000 feet) above sea level. It is the highest lake in the world and its surface area covers 5.3 km² (2.1 mi²). Lago Chungara was formed in the 1930s as a result of an earthquake in the area. During this period, a large portion of the Altiplano was submerged by a lake as the land slumped down along a fault at the foothills of Parinacota Volcano. The lake filled in over time until it reached a depth of 1400 feet (427 meters). It was first sighted by explorer Christian Gottlieb Taberner in 1939. Lago Chungara has historically been populated by a variety of bird species, including flamingos, grebes, ibis, peruvian pelicans, and cormorants. More recently, over 23 species of fish have been found in the lake, including endemic species. More recently, in 2006, Lago Chungara was declared a protected environmental area, by the Chilean government, in an effort to conserve its unique landscape.
