History:

Cochamó Valley is located in the Los Ríos Region in the south of Chile. It is bordered by the eastern slopes of the Andes and the Pacific Ocean. Cochamó Valley is a paradise that has been declared a Biosphere Reserve and National Monument. It has become known for its majestic nature, with spectacular rock walls for rock climbing and steep snow capped mountains with valleys and lagoons for hiking. The Cochamó Valley was home to the Chango and Huilliche Indigenous people for centuries. It was first discovered by the Europeans in 1641 by the Director of Valdivia, Francisco de Ulloa, who said it was the most beautiful valley in the valley area of Río Bueno. The valley was later explored by the Russian scientist and explorer Mijail Lomonsov in 1844. The area continued to be used for logging, farming and ranching until the late 20th century when it became popular with hikers and climbers. In July 2000, the Chilean government declared Cochamó Valley a National Monument and Biosphere Reserve in order to preserve its fantastic environment. Since then, access to the area and activities has been regulated in order to protect the local ecosystems and its rich history.
