It is believed that the devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary at the Sainte-Anne-de-Beaupré Shrine dates all the way back to the 1662, when a humble shepherd named Pierre Mignier discovered a statue of the Blessed Virgin Mary in the woods near the Saint Lawrence River. The statue was said to be miraculously dripping water on one side. Mignier and his family converted to Catholicism soon thereafter and the story of the statue spread in the community. In 1670, a small chapel dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary was built on the site of the statue's discovery.
