History:

Prince Edward Island National Park (PEINP) is a national park located in the eastern portion of Prince Edward Island, Canada. Established in 1937, PEINP is known for its intense red sandstone cliffs, rolling dunes, natural sandstone arches, and sandy beaches. The park is located in Queens and Prince counties, and includes stretches of the island’s north and south shores. Prince Edward Island was part of the original settlement of Acadia in 1604 by Samuel de Champlain. In 1720, the French began building their homes and communities in the area now known as PEINP. Following the expulsion of the French in 1755, the Island was granted to the British. In 1873, the Island was granted to Canada and became part of the Province of Prince Edward Island. In 1887, the federal government began purchasing land on the north shore for PEINP. By 1937, the park was officially established to protect the natural and cultural values of the area.
