History:
Montmorency Falls is a giant waterfall located on the Montmorency River near Quebec City in the province of Quebec, Canada. The falls are located on the border of the city of Quebec in the L’Ange-Gardien area of the Greater Quebec City Region. The falls were first discovered by French explorer Jacques Cartier in 1535. Cartier was the first European explorer to explore the region and he named the area “Montmorency” in honor of the French Duke of Montmorency. At that time, the only inhabitants of the region were the Iroquois First Nations people. The Iroquois used the falls as a trading center and a place to fish. The area around the falls has been used for recreational activities since at least the 17th century. In 1759, during the French and Indian War, the British conquered the region and took control of Montmorency Falls. In 1817, a suspension bridge was built over the falls. The first permanent bridge was built in 1845. Today, a cable car can take visitors to the top of the falls and there are several view points for breathtaking views of the surroundings. The Montmorency Falls Park was created in 1879 and has benefited from numerous upgrades since then, including a restored water walk walkways and improvements to the suspension bridge.
