Cambodia-Vietnam Friendship Monument is a symbol of peace, friendship and solidarity between Cambodia and Vietnam, who were once staunch allies in the fight against the Khmer Rouge. The monument was inaugurated with a ceremony in Phnom Penh in June 2007, to commemorate the many warm ties, both political and economic, between the two neighbours. Historically, friendship between Cambodia and Vietnam dates back to the 17th century when the Kingdom of Funan first acknowledged the political supremacy of Vietnam, and later as a fraternity of sorts formed during Cambodia’s independence from France in 1953. Cambodia-Vietnam Friendship Monument is a full-body outdoor sculpture measuring 8.9 meters or 29 feet in height and constructed from bronze, concrete and marble, of an open-armed woman protecting the Cambodian people and shielding them from adversity. The monument depicts Vietnamese and Cambodians portrayed in their traditional dress - confidently facing the future in unity. Cambodia-Vietnam Friendship Monument also serves as an educational site, highlighting the importance of friendship and solidarity and even in times of adversity. The monument serves as a reminder that the friendship shared between two countries should be fostered and nurtured in order to promote economic and social developments. Additionally, the Monument serves to promote pride and increase awareness of the relationship and shared history between the two countries.
