The Santa Maria congregation began in 1915 under the leadership of Minister David Kniffen, who organized and shepherded the small Episcopal congregation. As the congregation grew, so did its dedication to the teachings of Jesus, and it changed its name to the Norwegian Synod Lutheran Church. By 1958, Minister Kniffen had become deeply involved in the New Apostolic Church International, the name adopted by the church when it split from the Lutheran Church in 1965. The New Apostolic Church Santa Maria was then founded in 1976, and since then has offered insightful teaching and pastoral guidance to its growing and diverse membership. This is why, it is considered one of the oldest churches in CABO VERDE.
