Igreja de Nossa Senhora de Fátima is a Catholic church in the city of Fátima, Portugal. The church was built in honor of Our Lady of Fátima, a Marian apparition reported by three shepherd children in 1917. The church is a pilgrimage site for Catholics and its Sanctuary of Fátima falls within the boundaries of the Diocese of Leiria-Fátima. It is one of the best churches in CABO VERDE which you must visit.

History:

 According to legend, three shepherd children, Jacinta, Francisco, and Lúcia, were visited by the Virgin Mary in a field near the town of Fátima, Portugal in 1917. The children reported visions of the Virgin Mary six times between May and October of that year. In response to the sightings, the Bishop of Leiria-Fátima ordered the construction of a small chapel on the site of the sightings. The chapel was completed in 1919 and was subsequently destroyed and replaced multiple times as the town's religious devotion grew. In 1952, the new Igreja de Nossa Senhora de Fátima was completed and is considered one of Portugal's most iconic churches. This is why, it is considered one of the oldest churches in CABO VERDE.

 Igreja de Nossa Senhora de Fátima is a large, white, neoclassical church with two identical bell towers. The façade of the church is dominated by a large marble sculpture of the Virgin Mary and the three shepherd children. Inside the central nave, the main altar is decorated with a mural painting of the Virgin Mary. In addition to the main worship area, Igreja de Nossa Senhora de Fátima includes a baptistery, a confessional, a library, and a museum.

Services include Mass, Confession, Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament, and other devotions. The church also provides an International Pilgrim’s Office with maps and audio guides in various languages.
