History:
The chapel was built sometime around 1478, when Friar Fernão da Rocha obtained authorization from Prince D. Afonso V to erect a hermitage in this area of the country. In 1538, the chapel was expanded, and in 1539 it became the dowry of D. Leonor, daughter of D. João of Portugal and Queen Philippa of Lancaster. This is why, it is considered one of the oldest churches in CABO VERDE.

The Capela De Achada Grande Frente is a unique place in Portugal from the 15th century. It bears witness to the great devotion of Santa Cruz de Coimbra to Nossa Senhora da Guia. It is a chapel with a Manueline portal and a portal of Renaissance style and consists of a nave and choir, as well as several chapels within.
