St. Peter Catholic Church is a parish of the Roman Catholic Church located in the city of Washington, DC. The church was established in 1795 and is one of the oldest Catholic parishes in the United States. The parish is named in honor of Saint Peter, the chief of the twelve apostles.
History
St. Peter's was one of the first three parishes in the small city of Washington, DC. It was founded by Father John Carroll, who came to Washington to advocate for the rights of Catholics in the new capital city. The first Mass was celebrated on October 18th, 1795.
Facts
St. Peter's is the home of the Shrine of the Sacred Heart, located in the center of the main altar. It is the first shrine in the United States dedicated to this devotion. The parish is also known for its Roman architecture and its marble columns, as well as its massive 5,000-pipe organ.
