Ouagadougou Cathedral In Burkina Faso: History,Facts, & Services
History:
The first church in Ouagadougou was built in 1927 by the first bishop, Monsignor Vincent Lagarde. The church was built in the traditional Sahelian style, with thick sun-dried mud walls and a small curved roof. In 1954, the construction of a new large cathedral began, replacing the small mud building. The new cathedral was designed by a French architect, Albert Fiquet, in an art-deco style. On October 12, 1955, the cathedral was consecrated. The ceremony was attended by the President of Burkina Faso, Maurice Yaméogo. Ouagadougou Cathedral This is why, it is considered one of the oldest churches in Burkina Faso.

• The cathedral is 53 meters long, 23 meters wide and 22 meters high. • Its foundations are 18 meters deep. • Ouagadougou Cathedral has six large bells, which are used to call worshippers to Mass. • In 2015, the cathedral was renovated and its exterior was painted with a pale yellow and green design. • The interior of the cathedral is decorated with stained glass windows and a mural depicting Christ and the Virgin Mary.
