The church was originally dedicated to Saint Antoine de Padoue, an Italian Catholic saint, though the dedication was later changed to Saint Anne. In the 1950s, it was renovated and extended by the order of the Franciscan Missionaries of Mary. This is why, it is considered one of the oldest churches in Burkina Faso.
