History:
The original Gothic structure was built in the mid-12th century, although it was mostly destroyed in a fire around 1218. The reconstructed structure that stands today dates back to the 14th century, and features some Romanesque elements. During the Revolution, Église Saint Jean was damaged, closed and used as an armoury. The church was eventually reconsecrated in 1812 and restored during the 19th century. • Église Saint Jean is extremely prominent in the skyline of Orleans, as it is the tallest building in the city. • The church's nave measures 68 meters long and the transept measures a whopping 67 meters. • The bell tower of Église Saint Jean stands 92 meters tall. • Inside the church are a number of remarkable artworks, including the huge painting of Saint John the Baptist painted by French master Jacques Bellange. • The sepulchre of the architect, Jehan de Chelles, is located in the choir of the church.
