History:
The Lençóis Maranhenses National Park in Brazil is located in the northern part of the Maranhão state, near the towns of Santo Amaro, Santo Antônio, and Barreirinhas. This area of desert-like sand dunes and crystal clear lagoons was declared a federal conservation area in 1981 and became a national park in 1998. It occupies an area of 1.5 million hectares and contains an incredible variety of landscapes including, freshwater lagoons, mangroves, and sand dunes up to 40 meters high. The park is home to several endangered species including the maned wolf and the hyacinth macaw, as well as numerous species of fish and birds. Due to its unique geology, the park is just one of two sites in the world that can be accessed by both land and sea (the other being the Archipiélago de Revillagigedo in Mexico). The Patos Lagoon and Atap Access Road provide the main access routes to the park, and the various lagoons and islands that can be seen from the Atap Road are one of the highlights of the area. The park also contains numerous historical and archaeological sites, including the ruins of the Fort of Barreirinhas, as well as Palmyra's Hill and Mount Gusto Hill which contain evidence of Indigenous occupation.
