History:
is one of the oldest churches in the city, and is the official seat of the Archdiocese of São Sebastião do Rio de Janeiro. It is located in the city centre of the city, and was built between 1745 and 1770 to replace the old church of the Jesuit Order that was demolished during the colonization of Brazil. It was the place of coronation of Emperor Pedro I and Empress Leopoldina in 1817. The building is now a National Monument of Brazil, and is considered one of the most imposing baroque religious structures in the country.
