It was the first airport created in the country and the first international airport in Botswana. The airport was named after Sir Seretse Khama, the first President of Botswana, who played an instrumental role in the development of the modern Botswana state. The airport was upgraded to accommodate larger aircraft and international flights in 1983. This expansion marked the beginning of the airport's transformation into the bustling international hub it is today. In 1991-92, the airport was further upgraded and expanded, including the installment of air traffic control instruments and airport apron facilities.
