The Botswana International Church of Christ was born out of the International Churches of Christ (ICOC) in 2001. The ICOC was born in 1979 in Boston where it grew at a very fast rate to become one of the largest and most influential Christian churches in the world. Amid allegations of an unhealthy levels of control, strict authoritarianism and a heavy emphasis on discipling and raising funds, a group of members in Botswana left the ICOC in 2001 to form their own independent church. This is why, it is considered one of the oldest churches in Botswana.
