The Dutch Reformed Church (DRC) of Gaborone, Botswana, was one of the first churches to be established in the southern African country. It was founded in 1964 as a joint venture between the Dutch Reformed Church of South Africa and the Evangelical Home Mission Church. The first church services were held at a makeshift building in an old quarry by the founder of the Gaborone church, Dutch Reformed minister Reverend J. H. Smit. The church was officially registered under the name ‘Gaborone Dutch Reformed Church’ in 1978 and has since then had a major influence on the spiritual life of the growing city. The congregation is currently populated with members from all over the world, reflecting the multiculturalism that has become a part of the cultural fabric of Gaborone.
