Charles Hill was born in the village of Mahalapye, Botswana in 1923 and grew up there during a period of tremendous social and political change. His mother and father were Anglican converts who were among the first settlers in Mahalapye, and his father, Chief Maskiri, was the local chief. When Charles was twenty-one, the South African colonial government was forcing the Bechuanaland Protectorate (now Botswana) to become part of South Africa. In an effort to resist this move, Charles joined the Bechuanaland National Council and later trained as a military officer in Zimbabwe. He also established a rehabilitation centre for prisoners and orphans and was an active participant in the Campaign of 1964, which sought to abort the South African takeover. Charles was one of the founders of the Botswana Democratic Party in 1966, when the nation finally gained its independence. In 1972, Charles was elected to Parliament in the newly established National Assembly, and served until 1986. During his tenure in office, he served on various committees, such as the Local Government Committee and the Foreign Trade and Finance Committee. As a Parliamentarian, he championed various humanitarian causes and was a key figure in the construction of better roads and better education for all citizens.
