Camino de las Yungas (The Yungas Road) is an approximately 80 km (50 mi) long road located in northeastern Bolivia. It connects the Bolivian capital of La Paz with the town of Coroico and the Yungas region of the Amazon rainforest. It is considered one of the world’s deadliest roads, due to its extreme danger. The road was built by Paraguayan prisoners of war during the Chaco War of 1932-35. It is narrow and winding, with extremely poor visibility and steep drop offs with no guard rails. History:

The Camino de las Yungas is one of the most famous and popular roads in Bolivia. The road is known for its incredible scenery and stunning mountain views. The road passes through the Yungas region, an area of high mountain jungle just outside of La Paz. The Camino de las Yungas has been in use for centuries. It was originally an Incan route which connected the Incan settlement of Cuzco in Peru with the main city of the Incan Empire, Potosi. It was used to bring new goods from Potosi into Cuzco and to carry out important messages between the cities. The main route from Potosi to Cuzco was the Camino Real, a route which included the notorious "Death Road" which was often treacherous and had high casualty rates. To make travel safer, a path called the Camino Real de las Yungas was created in the 19th century. It was an alternativeroute to the Death Road. It was slightly longer but much safer due to its many breathtaking waterfalls, lush jungle, and green valleys. Today, the Camino de las Yungas is still used for transportation and sightseeing.
